Homemade Sushi Rolls Recipe

Ingredients:

For Sushi Rice:

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For Sushi Rolls:

  • Nori sheets (seaweed sheets)
  • Sushi rice (prepared)
  • Sliced raw fish (salmon, tuna), cooked shrimp, or crab sticks
  • Sliced avocado
  • Sliced cucumber
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Soy sauce, pickled ginger, wasabi (for serving, optional)

Preparing Sushi Rice:

  • Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Drain the rice thoroughly.
  • Combine the rinsed rice and water in a rice cooker or pot and cook according to package instructions.
  • In a small saucepan, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat over low heat until the sugar and salt dissolve. Set aside to cool.
  • Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl. Gradually add the vinegar mixture to the rice, gently folding it in to evenly coat the rice. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.

Assembling Sushi Rolls:

  • Place a nori sheet on a bamboo sushi mat or a clean kitchen towel.
  • With wet hands, spread a thin layer of sushi rice evenly over the nori sheet, leaving a small border at the top.
  • Arrange slices of fish, avocado, cucumber, or any desired fillings on the bottom third of the nori sheet.
  • Using the bamboo mat or towel, tightly roll the nori sheet over the fillings, pressing gently but firmly as you roll to seal the sushi roll.
  • Once rolled, use a sharp knife to slice the roll into bite-sized pieces.

Serve and Enjoy:

  • Serve the homemade sushi rolls with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side, if desired.
