Homemade Gyro Recipe




 Ingredients:

For the Gyro Meat:

  • 1 pound (450g) ground lamb or beef (or a mix)
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the Tzatziki Sauce:

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 cucumber, grated and drained
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (optional)
  • Salt to taste

For Serving:

  • Pita bread or flatbread
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced red onion
  • Chopped lettuce

Preparing the Gyro Meat:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, grated onion, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried thyme, ground cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until thoroughly combined.
  • Shape the meat mixture into a loaf or log shape.
  • Preheat your grill or oven broiler. Grill or broil the meat for about 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally, until it's cooked through and nicely browned on the outside. Let it rest for a few minutes before slicing thinly.

Making the Tzatziki Sauce:

  • In another bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, grated and drained cucumber, minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, fresh dill (if using), and salt. Mix well to combine.

  • Warm the pita bread or flatbread.
  • Place a few slices of the grilled meat onto the warmed bread.
  • Top with sliced tomatoes, sliced red onion, chopped lettuce, and a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce.
  • Roll the bread around the filling to form a gyro.
